Kevin Murphy

Dr. Kevin Murphy is a Lecturer in Clinical Pharmacy at the School of Pharmacy, University College Cork (UCC). He holds a PhD in Clinical Pharmacy from UCC (2014) and a BPharm (Hons) from the same institution (2007). His research focuses on clinical pharmacy practice, medication safety, deprescribing, and healthcare education, particularly in geriatric populations and multimorbid patients. He is a core member of the OPERAM trial, a €6.6M EU-funded study investigating pharmacotherapy optimization to reduce hospital admissions in elderly patients.

Dr. Murphy’s professional roles include contributing to UCC’s BPharm/MPharm and MSc (Clinical Pharmacy) programs, as well as the Certificate in Nurse Prescribing. He has held various academic and research positions since 2011, including post-doctoral roles in the OPERAM trial (2016–2018). He is actively involved in academic committees, including the School of Pharmacy’s Equality, Diversity & Inclusion committee and the Athena SWAN Steering Group.

His research interests span medication safety, deprescribing strategies, and healthcare quality improvement. Notable contributions include studies on benzodiazepine misuse in youth, palliative care education needs for pharmacists, and the impact of EU drug policies on community pharmacies. He has secured grants totaling over €30K and authored/co-authored numerous peer-reviewed articles in journals like BMJ Quality & Safety and European Journal of Oncology Nursing.
