Kevin Fernandez Cosials

Kevin Fernandez Cosials is an Associate Professor in the Department of Energy and Fuels at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). He has been an active member of the research group Ciencia y Tecnología de sistemas avanzados de fisión nuclear since 2015. His work focuses on nuclear reactor safety, particularly thermal-hydraulic modeling of containment buildings during design-basis accidents (e.g., LBLOCA) and external hazards like flooding.

His research interests span nuclear engineering, computational fluid dynamics (GOTHIC code applications), passive safety systems in Generation III+ reactors (AP1000®), severe accident management, and bibliometric analysis. Recent publications analyze post-Fukushima safety enhancements, including external flooding risks and station blackout scenarios.

He also explores pedagogical innovation in nuclear engineering education, such as role-play exercises to teach creative problem-solving for accident scenarios.
