Kevin Crowley

Kevin Crowley is a Professor of Education at the University of Pittsburgh's School of Education and a Senior Scientist at the Learning Research and Development Center, co-directing the University of Pittsburgh Center for Learning in Out-of-School Environments (UPCLOSE). His work focuses on informal learning ecosystems, emphasizing the role of museums, community networks, and family engagement in science education. Crowley holds a PhD in Psychology from Carnegie Mellon University (1994), with postdoctoral training in cognitive science.

His research spans climate change education in rural areas, interest-driven learning pathways, and partnerships between museums and community organizations. He has led NSF-funded initiatives like the Climate Rural Systems Partnership and the Center for Advancing Informal Science Education (CAISE), fostering collaboration across informal science institutions. Crowley co-edits the Visitor Studies journal and advises international organizations including the National Academy of Sciences and UNESCO.

Recent projects include designing mixed-reality museum exhibits and evaluating climate education networks. His awards include the Roy L. Shafer Leading Edge Award and the MetLife Promising Practice Award for UPCLOSE's work with the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh. Crowley has advised over 25 doctoral students and contributed to educational policy through roles like Interim Department Chair of Administrative and Policy Studies.
