Kevin Arrigo is the Donald and Donald M. Steel Professor of Earth Sciences at Stanford University's School of Earth Sciences and a Senior Fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment. He has served on the Stanford faculty since 1999, progressing from Assistant Professor in the Department of Geophysics to his current position as Professor in the Department of Earth System Science. Arrigo has held significant leadership roles including Director of the Earth Systems Program and co-director of the Earth Systems Program within the School of Earth Sciences.
Arrigo earned his B.S. in Natural Resources from the University of Michigan in 1983, followed by work with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. He then completed his Ph.D. in Biological Sciences at the University of Southern California in 1992, followed by a postdoctoral position and subsequent civil servant role at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center before joining Stanford.
As a biological oceanographer, Arrigo's research focuses on marine microalgae and their critical role in carbon and nitrogen cycling, particularly in polar oceans. His interdisciplinary approach integrates satellite remote sensing, ecophysiological modeling, and laboratory and field studies to understand phytoplankton dynamics across diverse marine environments from the Southern Ocean to the Red Sea.
