Kenneth Rooney

Kenneth Rooney is Lecturer in Medieval and Renaissance Literature at University College Cork's School of English. His research examines representations of death in Middle English texts, analyzing literary responses to mortality across genres from romance to devotional literature. Rooney authored 'Mortality and Imagination: The Life of the Dead in Medieval English Literature' - the first comprehensive study of death across medieval vernacular writing.

Research explores:

• Eschatological narratives in manuscript contexts
• Violence and mortality in romance literature
• Debates between body and soul traditions
• Cultural attitudes toward death in 13th-15th centuries

Teaching includes Chaucer, medieval pulp fiction, and Renaissance transitions in literary traditions. He coordinates the MA in Medieval and Renaissance English and received IRCHSS funding for doctoral research on death in literature.
