University of North Carolina at Chapel HillAbout
Kenneth J. Lohmann is the Charles P. Postelle, Jr. Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is affiliated with the Department of Marine Sciences, the Galapagos Science Center Advisory Board, and is a Fellow at the Center for Galapagos Studies. His research focuses on the behavior, sensory biology, and conservation of marine animals, particularly their navigation mechanisms and magnetic field perception. He holds prestigious fellowships from the AAAS and the Royal Institute of Navigation (U.K.).
Research Interests:
- Long-distance ocean migration in sea turtles, salmon, spiny lobsters, and elephant seals
- Magnetic field detection and geomagnetic imprinting in animals
- Applications of sensory ecology and movement ecology to conservation
- Neurobiology of marine invertebrates and fishes
- Techniques: Behavioral studies, oceanographic modeling, electrophysiology, and interdisciplinary approaches combining biology, physics, and engineering
Labs/Teams: The Lohmann Lab at UNC-Chapel Hill emphasizes cross-disciplinary research, integrating fields like neuroethology, conservation biology, and marine ecosystems. Current projects include studies of sea turtle hatchling navigation and wave detection, as well as magnetic field detection mechanisms in animals.
