Prof. Kenneth Chambaere serves as Interdisciplinary Professor of Public Health, Sociology & Ethics of the End of Life at Ghent University's End-of-Life Care Research Group. Holding an MSc in Sociology (2004), Postgraduate in Logic, History and Philosophy of Science (2005), and PhD in Medical-Social Sciences (2010), he previously worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow of the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) from 2010-2016.
His research focuses on three main themes: (1) end-of-life practices, (2) palliative care in and by the community, and (3) end-of-life care for people in vulnerable positions. His specific projects include assisted dying/euthanasia; palliative sedation; perinatal palliative care; tiredness of life in older people; Compassionate Communities; and palliative care for difficult-to-reach groups.
With over 70 international peer-reviewed publications, his work spans medical ethics, public health, and sociology of death and dying. Recent publications highlight global trends in assisted dying legislation, community-based compassionate care models, and ethical considerations in end-of-life decision-making.
Prof. Chambaere's research demonstrates consistent growth in scholarly output, with 148 publications spanning from 2008-2025, showing increasing focus on community-based palliative care approaches and ethical frameworks for vulnerable populations in recent years.
