Ken Rutherford

Ken Rutherford is a Professor of Political Science at James Madison University (JMU), specializing in International Peacekeeping, International Security, African Politics, and Conventional Weapons. He previously served as Director of JMU’s Center for International Stabilization and Recovery and has extensive field experience in humanitarian emergency response, including roles as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mauritania (1987-1989), UNHCR Emergency Refugee Coordinator in Senegal (1989), and humanitarian relief officer in Kenya/Somalia (1993). Dr. Rutherford teaches courses on international law, global disability rights, and stability operations.

His work emphasizes incorporating survivor voices into international security frameworks and addressing post-conflict recovery.

His publications include five books analyzing landmine disarmament, humanitarian interventions, and NGO policy influence. These works span disarmament treaties, war’s long-term consequences, and humanitarian law, reflecting a consistent focus on global security and victim-centered approaches.
