Ken Mulvaney is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Social Sciences (Archaeology) at The University of Western Australia. He also serves as Principal Cultural Heritage Officer at Rio Tinto Iron Ore in the Pilbara region, focusing on the Burrup Peninsula’s cultural heritage. His career spans over four decades in archaeology and anthropology, with expertise in Australian rock art, sacred sites, and Aboriginal ethnology.
Education: BA (Hons) from Sheffield University (1980), MA from Northern Territory University (1997), PhD from University of New England (2010), focusing on Dampier Archipelago petroglyphs.
Research interests include rock art identification, cultural landscape preservation, and Aboriginal liaison. He has conducted excavations globally and held roles such as Northern Territory Coroner’s adviser on human remains (1993–2003). Over 20 publications address rock art and Aboriginal culture, including co-editing Murujuga: Dynamics of the Dreaming (2023).
