Keith Wiebe serves as a Senior Research Fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), where he leads the CGIAR Research Initiative on Foresight within the Foresight and Policy Modeling Unit. With over a decade at IFPRI since joining in 2013, Dr. Wiebe brings extensive experience from previous leadership roles at the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the US Department of Agriculture.
- BA in Economics from Carleton College
- MA and PhD in Agricultural Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison
Dr. Wiebe's research program centers on climate change impacts on agricultural systems, natural resource economics, productivity enhancement strategies, and global food security frameworks. His work uniquely bridges quantitative foresight modeling with policy analysis, examining how food systems might evolve under different climate and socioeconomic scenarios. He emphasizes understanding trade-offs between environmental sustainability, economic development, and nutritional outcomes in food system transformations.
His recent publications reveal a sophisticated approach to food systems analysis, integrating artificial intelligence with traditional modeling techniques to explore alternative futures. Dr. Wiebe's work consistently highlights the importance of acknowledging uncertainty while developing robust policy pathways, with particular attention to how extreme weather events, land degradation, and technological innovation might reshape food production and distribution networks.
- Contributor to FAO's flagship reports: State of Food and Agriculture and State of Food Insecurity in the World
- Developer of integrated modeling frameworks connecting climate projections with agricultural outcomes
- Advocate for linking qualitative foresight with quantitative modeling approaches
As Lead of the CGIAR Research Initiative on Foresight, Dr. Wiebe directs a global program that supports evidence-based policy decisions through scenario analysis and impact assessment. His team develops tools that help policymakers understand potential consequences of different investment and policy choices on food security outcomes across multiple time horizons.
