Kay Smith

Kay Smith is the Acting Head of Department for Accounting, Finance, Logistics and Economics and holds the position of Senior Lecturer at the Huddersfield Business School, part of the School of Business, Education and Law at the University of Huddersfield. She has been with the institution since 2007, previously working in Further Education where she managed programs and served as deputy head of department. Her research focuses on mortgage accessibility for ethnic minorities and the socio-economic impacts of financial crises, particularly in the UK context.

Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to reduced inequalities and sustainable cities. She has authored one notable article analyzing the Great Financial Crisis's disproportionate effects on minority groups' mortgage access. Supervising two postgraduate students, her academic activities include roles as Finance Trustee and former Chair of Governors (2016–2020). She also provided expert commentary on educational funding challenges in small village schools.

Professional contributions include membership in the University's Centre for Sustainability, Responsibility, Governance and Ethics. Her research integrates interdisciplinary perspectives from economics, sociology, and public policy to address systemic financial inequities.
