Dr. Nikolaos Katsarakis is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Hellenic Mediterranean University (ELMEPA), where he has served as Rector since May 2019. He holds a Chemical Engineering degree from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and a PhD in 'Chemical Technology of Inorganic Materials' from Graz University of Technology, Austria.
His research focuses on (I) developing nanomaterials for environmental and energy applications, including thin films, photocatalytic materials, self-cleaning coatings, and thermochromic/electrochromic devices; and (II) designing optoelectronic materials and metamaterials using spectroscopic methods. He has supervised 2 PhD and 18 Master’s theses.
He co-founded the EXEL research group, awarded the prestigious CARTESIOS Prize by the European Union in 2005 for groundbreaking work on left-handed metamaterials. With over 120 peer-reviewed publications, 6,000+ citations (h-index 42), he leads collaborations across Greece and internationally as Principal Investigator.
