About
Katja Doerschner serves as an Adjunct Professor at the National Magnetic Resonance Research Center (UMRAM) at Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey, and concurrently holds a faculty position at the Mind Brain and Behavior Center of Justus-Liebig University Giessen, Germany, where she leads an independent research group funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's Sofja Kovalevskaja Award.
Her academic foundation includes:
- Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology, New York University, USA (2002-2006)
- M.A. in Psychology, New York University, USA (2005)
- B.A. in Psychology, University of Rhode Island, USA (2000-2002)
Dr. Doerschner's pioneering research investigates visual perception mechanisms, specifically how the brain transforms ambiguous retinal input into coherent perceptual experiences. Her work centers on identifying the information sources the visual system uses for object property prediction and neural extraction processes. Methodologically, she integrates psychophysics experiments, computational modeling, pattern analysis, neuroimaging techniques, and patient studies to advance understanding of visual cognition.
Her scientific contributions have earned significant recognition:
- TUBA GEBIP Award from the Turkish Academy of Sciences
- TÜBİTAK Incentive Award from the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey
- Prestigious Sofja Kovalevskaja Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation
Research funding has been secured from major international bodies including TÜBİTAK, TÜBA, EU Framework Programmes (FP7/H2020), and the Humboldt Foundation. She directs the Computational and Biological Vision Group at UMRAM and the Brain Research Center, while also operating the Brain and Perception Lab, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations in vision science.
