Katina Michael

Katina Michael is a Professor at Arizona State University (ASU), holding a joint appointment in the School for the Future of Innovation in Society and the School of Computing, Informatics and Decision Systems Engineering. She also serves as an Honorary Professor at the University of Wollongong (UoW), Australia. Her roles include directing the Centre for Engineering, Policy and Society and former editor-in-chief of the IEEE Technology and Society Magazine. She is a board member of the Australian Privacy Foundation and affiliated with IEEE.

Research Interests: Privacy, technology ethics, surveillance, social media impact on politics, AI implications, cybersecurity, and the societal effects of emerging technologies. Her work critically examines the ethical and privacy dimensions of digital tools, from contact tracing apps to smart toys and border device searches.

Grants & Funding: Receives support from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and Australian Research Council (ARC). Her research has addressed topics such as pandemic technology ethics, political bot manipulation, and child privacy in consumer tech.

Labs & Initiatives: Leads the Centre for Engineering, Policy and Society, which explores interdisciplinary solutions to technological challenges. Her work bridges engineering, policy, and societal impact.
