Katie Shannon

Katie Shannon is a Teaching Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Missouri University of Science and Technology. She also serves as Director of the Confocal Microscope at the Center for Biomedical Research and Pre-health Advisor. Her research focuses on cytokinesis regulation in budding yeast, specifically examining how signaling pathways control cell division. She holds a Ph.D. in Cell and Developmental Biology from Harvard Medical School (2000) and a B.A. in Biology from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (1994).

Her educational contributions include developing innovative classroom strategies such as flipped learning models and CURE (Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences) programs integrating CRISPR technology. She actively engages in STEM education research, investigating how medical topic integration and student preparation impact learning outcomes. Shannon is also involved in K-12 STEM outreach initiatives to enhance scientific engagement in communities.

Her research spans molecular mechanisms of cell division, nanoparticle toxicity studies using single-cell ICP-MS, and quantum dot delivery systems. She is a member of the American Society for Cell Biology, Society for the Advancement of Biology Education Research, and National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions.

Shannon’s lab work involves advanced microscopy techniques and collaborative efforts in biomedical research. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes active learning and real-world application of scientific concepts through hands-on research experiences.
