Dr. Katie Preece is a Senior Lecturer in Geography at Swansea University, part of the School of Biosciences, Geography and Physics within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Her research focuses on volcanology, magmatic processes, volcanic hazards, geochronology, and geochemistry. She holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education and an Advance HE Fellowship.
Dr. Preece completed her MGeosci. at Keele University, a Master’s in Volcanology at Université Blaise Pascal (France), and a PhD at the University of East Anglia. She has held postdoctoral positions at the University of East Anglia and the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC). Her work integrates field studies, petrology, and geochronology to understand volcanic systems, with notable contributions to studies of Merapi volcano (Indonesia) and Ascension Island.
Her teaching includes modules on volcanology, natural hazards, and field skills. She supervises postgraduate students, such as the current PhD student researching monogenetic volcanism in Armenia.
Dr. Preece’s research spans volcanic hazards, magmatic evolution, and tephrochronology, with publications in journals like Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research and contributions to books on Merapi. Her awards include the Advance HE Fellowship, reflecting her commitment to teaching excellence.
