Kathryn Topper

Kathryn Topper is Professor Emerita of Classics at the University of Washington, with adjunct appointments in Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies. Her scholarship examines Greek visual culture through literary, gender, and reception frameworks.

Education:

Topper's research explores intersections of imagery, literature, and performance in Greek antiquity. Current projects analyze representations of Helen of Troy in popular media and Ptolemaic spectacle culture. Her work emphasizes gender dynamics in banquet scenes and mythological narratives.

Publications consistently engage Athenian vase painting as historical evidence, tracing cultural values through visual metaphors. Recent studies examine beauty as destructive power and imperial self-representation.
