Kathryn Chadwick

Kathryn Chadwick, a Principal Lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University, has spent 31 years in Higher Education across institutions like The Open University, Edge Hill University, and Liverpool John Moores University. She earned her PhD in 1996 from the Open University, focusing on Scottish prison reorganization's impact on long-term male prisoners. Her career includes designing and leading undergraduate/postgraduate courses, founding the Centre for Studies in Crime and Social Justice at Edge Hill University, and introducing the UK’s first Critical Criminology degree.

Her research spans prisons, gender justice, suicide prevention in custody, and the politics of punishment, informed by projects like the Hillsborough Disaster inquest analysis (2014-2016) and work on women’s incarceration (2008). She supervises PhD candidates including Craig Fletcher (Proceeds of Crime Act 2002) and Paul Dresser (prevent policing legitimacy).
