Katherine Checkland

Katherine Checkland is a Professor of Health Policy & Primary Care at the University of Manchester, affiliated with the Division of Population Health, Health Services Research & Primary Care. She holds a joint role as a GP in a rural Derbyshire practice, working one day weekly. Her research focuses on health policy impacts on primary care organizations, organizational behavior in healthcare systems, and healthcare workforce dynamics, with a particular emphasis on health inequalities and policy implementation.

Dr. Checkland earned an MBBS BMedSci, MRCGP, MA(Econ), and PhD. She co-leads the Primary Care theme of the Greater Manchester CLAHRC and serves on the Editorial Board of the BJGP and NIHR Fellowship Panel. Her academic contributions span over 190 publications and 10 research projects, including evaluations of national healthcare initiatives like the New Care Models Vanguard program.

Her work addresses critical healthcare challenges such as GP workforce retention, equitable access to primary care, and the integration of community health services. Notable research includes studies on skill-mix changes in primary care teams, the impact of policy frameworks on general practice, and the role of relational continuity in patient care. She has received recognition for her work on organizational routines in healthcare innovation.
