Katharina Uhde is an Assistant Professor of Music at Valparaiso University, combining roles as a violinist and musicologist. She specializes in the study of 19th-century violinist and composer Joseph Joachim, authoring the definitive monograph The Music of Joseph Joachim (2018). Uhde holds a PhD in Musicology from Duke University and a DMA from the University of Michigan. Her work bridges performance and scholarship, including rediscovering and editing Joachim's early orchestral works, which were performed and recorded internationally. She has received grants from Valparaiso University and the Fritz Thyssen Foundation to support her research and performances. Uhde is also co-authoring a monograph on musical ciphers with R. Larry Todd and actively presents at conferences worldwide.
Her performances include solo and chamber music engagements with orchestras such as the Polish Radio Orchestra Warsaw and the Sinfonia Varsovia. She has won competitions in the Czech Republic, Germany, and the U.S., and her recordings include the CD Brasilianische Kammermusik and works by Joachim. Uhde's interdisciplinary research explores themes of cultural identity, musical enculturation, and historical performance practices.
