About
Dr. Katelyn A. Bruno is an Assistant Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Florida's Department of Medicine, with a focus on the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine. She holds affiliated appointments in the Departments of Physiology and Aging, Pharmacology & Therapeutics, and is Deputy Director of the Center of Regenerative Medicine. Her research spans translational science in myocarditis, heart failure, and cardio-oncology, with a strong emphasis on sex differences and biomarker development. Dr. Bruno also contributes to organizational leadership roles in societies like HFSA and FCACC.
Education: PhD in Environmental Health Sciences (Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, 2016), Postdoctoral Fellowship at Mayo Clinic (2016–2021). Undergraduate degrees include BS in Chemistry (Johns Hopkins) and BS in Criminal Justice (Sam Houston State University).
Research Interests: Dr. Bruno’s work centers on translational cardiology, including novel diagnostics for myocarditis, sex/gender disparities in cardiovascular diseases, and therapeutic strategies for heart failure. Her lab integrates animal models, patient samples, and clinical data to bridge bench-to-bedside discoveries. Key areas include hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) cardiology, biomarker identification, and cardio-oncology.
Publications Trends: Recent work emphasizes viral myocarditis mechanisms, EDS-related cardiac defects, and sex differences in mitochondrial gene expression. Her studies often combine clinical data with preclinical models, highlighting translational applications.
Scientific Awards: Over 20 notable recognitions, including HFSA’s Special Achievement Award (2022), FACC Fellow designation (2024), and multiple travel/mentorship awards from leading cardiology societies.
Grants & Advising: Principal Investigator on NIAID-funded projects studying viral myocarditis in pediatric/adult populations and the role of TRPC6 in chemotherapy-induced cardiomyopathy. Active in collaborative initiatives like the UF RegeneGators student organization and multi-institutional cardio-oncology symposia.
Labs & Teams: Leads the Bruno Laboratory at UF, focusing on biomarker discovery, therapeutic development, and disease progression prevention. Collaborates with Mayo Clinic and international institutions on heart failure and cardio-oncology research.
