Kate Snodgrass is a Professor of the Practice of Playwriting in Boston University’s English Department and serves as Artistic Director of Boston Playwrights’ Theatre and the Elliot Norton Award-winning Boston Theater Marathon. Formerly, she held leadership roles including National Chair of the Kennedy Center’s Playwriting Program and Vice President of StageSource, Inc. She is a member of Actors’ Equity, A.F.T.R.A., and the Dramatists’ Guild.
Her academic background includes two B.A. degrees from Kansas University and Wichita State University, and an M.A. in Creative Writing from Boston University. She has taught at Wellesley College, Brandeis University, MIT, Harvard’s American Repertory Theatre Institute, Suffolk University, and Lesley University.
Snodgrass’ research and creative work focuses on playwriting, theatre production, and educational outreach. Her notable plays include Haiku (Heideman Award-winning, internationally performed), The Glider (IRNE Award winner), and Observatory (multiple award recipient). These works explore human dynamics through innovative narrative structures and culturally resonant themes.
Her directing credits at Boston Playwrights’ Theatre include productions of Tom McClellan, Michael Moss, and Patricia Smith. She is a Huntington Theatre Company Playwriting Fellow and has been recognized with prestigious awards including the Tanne Foundation Award (2015) and the Elliot Norton Award for Sustained Excellence (2012).
Snodgrass’ pedagogical contributions are highlighted by her development and teaching of playwriting curricula, mentorship of emerging artists, and advocacy for theatre education. Her creative process emphasizes collaboration between playwrights, directors, and actors to produce impactful theatrical experiences.
