Kate Poirier

Kate Poirier is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the New York City College of Technology (CityTech), which is part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system. She earned her Ph.D. at the CUNY Graduate Center and has extensive teaching experience including tutoring high school students, working as a teaching assistant, teaching undergraduate classes at Baruch College, and instructing math majors at UC Berkeley as a postdoc.

Dr. Poirier's primary research interests focus on algebraic and geometric topology. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes making education accessible while fostering student independence through innovative methodologies. She creates supportive learning environments from the first day of class, using collaborative approaches and technology integration to enhance mathematical understanding and communication skills.

She actively serves as chair of the Math Department Curriculum Committee, member of the Undergraduate Research Committee, Math Coordinator for the Atrium Learning Center, and the Math Department's STEM Liaison. Her teaching incorporates WeBWorK for homework assignments and Desmos for visual learning, with special emphasis on mathematical communication through her innovative "style point" grading approach that evaluates not just answers but logical progression and presentation.
