About
Dr. Kate Mathis is a Professor leading the Mathis Lab, which investigates ecological principles through observational studies, field experiments, chemical ecology, and lab experiments. Her work focuses on complex species interactions, chemical ecology, social insects, and agroecosystems. The lab actively mentors graduate students and collaborates on interdisciplinary research.
Research Interests: Dr. Mathis explores how species interactions influence managed systems, with a particular emphasis on chemical ecology (e.g., ant communication), social insect behavior, and ecological responses to urbanization and invasive species. Her lab integrates field and lab techniques to study behavioral adaptation and ecosystem dynamics.
Lab News Highlights:
- 2024: Brooke Harris published her first paper.
- 2023: Dale Stevens joined Bucknell University as a Visiting Assistant Professor.
- 2023: Josh Canning completed his Master's thesis on ant learning and memory.
- 2023: Dr. Mathis presented at the Ecological Society of America conference.
Scientific Awards:
- Multiple students awarded Weiller, SURE, Penn Summer, Lyerla, Hastings, SURF, and LEEP Fellowships.
Advising & Grants: Dr. Mathis mentors PhD and Master’s students, including Joe Nelsen, Daley O'Keefe, and others. Her lab supports research through grants and institutional fellowships.
