Dr. Kate MacCord is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the School of Life Sciences at Arizona State University (ASU), with affiliations in the History and Philosophy of Science (PhD) program and the Center for Biology and Society. She holds a PhD in History and Philosophy of Science from ASU (2017), an MPhil in Human Evolutionary Studies from the University of Cambridge (2010, Gates Scholar), and a BPhil in Anthropology from the University of Pittsburgh (2009).
Her research focuses on germline biology, cell lineages, regeneration, and the history of developmental biology. She co-leads the McDonnell Initiative at the Marine Biological Laboratory, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations between historians, philosophers, and scientists. Her recent publications explore germline dynamics, regeneration theory, and the historical assumptions shaping modern science.
Dr. MacCord teaches courses on the history of medicine, biology, and the intersection of science with society. She has received numerous teaching awards, including the 2024 Provost Teaching Award and the 2022 CLAS Outstanding Teaching Professor Award. Her service includes roles in academic committees, professional societies, and editorial work for Harvard University Press.
