Kate Havel

Kate Havel is an Adjunct Assistant Professor and Operations Specialist in the Construction Management Program at Northern Michigan University (NMU). She holds a bachelor's degree in Merchandising Management from Michigan State University and a master's in Human Resource Management from DePaul University, alongside NMU's Building Technology degree (2022). Her career spans retail merchandising, HR in Chicago, and a pivot to construction through volunteer work and self-directed learning. She currently teaches, coordinates recruitment and outreach for the CM program, and leads initiatives like the Women in Construction initiative.

Research & Outreach: Focuses on expanding access to construction education for women and underserved groups through her nonprofit U.P. She Builders and small business DIYmqt. Her work emphasizes hands-on training and gender equity in trades. Recently completed a 5,000 sq ft self-built home in Marquette, highlighting her practical expertise.

Grants & Collaborations: Spearheads the Women in Construction initiative to diversify the field. Collaborates with NMU's CM program to enhance educational outreach and industry partnerships.

Labs/Teams: Operates U.P. She Builders (nonprofit) and DIYmqt (business), both dedicated to empowering women and girls in construction and design.
