Kate Crawford is a Research Professor of Communication and STS at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School, a Senior Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research NYC, and the inaugural visiting chair for AI and Justice at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris. Her work examines the social, political, and environmental impacts of artificial intelligence, emphasizing ethical frameworks and systemic critiques. She leads the interdisciplinary Knowing Machines Project and co-founded the AI Now Institute and FATE (Fairness, Accountability, Transparency, and Ethics in AI).
Her research spans academic journals like Nature, Science, Technology & Human Values, and New Media & Society, alongside award-winning collaborations with artists such as Vladan Joler and Trevor Paglen. Notable works include the Beazley Award-winning Anatomy of an AI System and the critically acclaimed book Atlas of AI (2021), which explores AI’s planetary costs. Her art and research have been exhibited globally, including at MoMA (New York) and Fondazione Prada (Milan).
Crawford advises governments and international bodies, including the UN, EU, and Spain’s presidency. She has received prestigious honors like the Ayrton Prize and the Silver Lion at the Venice Architecture Biennale. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges academia, policy, and public engagement through speaking engagements, media collaborations, and advocacy for equitable AI governance.
