Karsten Theis is a Professor in the Department of Chemical and Physical Sciences at Westfield State University, where he joined in Fall 2010. His research focuses on structural biology (protein-nucleic acid interactions, X-ray crystallography, NMR) and science education (online learning tools, quantitative problem solving, molecular models). He holds a Ph.D. in Structural Biology (1996) and B.Sc. in Chemistry (1991), both from Free University of Berlin, Germany.
His educational initiatives include developing PQcalc - an online calculator for tracking units and significant figures in scientific calculations, creating open educational resources, and serving on the editorial board of Proteopedia.org, the collaborative 3D encyclopedia of proteins. He teaches courses including General Chemistry, Biochemistry, and 3D Molecular Animation.
