Karsten Raulund-Rasmussen

Karsten Raulund-Rasmussen is a Professor of Ecosystem Services and Functions at the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen. He also serves as Research Director of Ecosystems and Biomass Sciences and Study Director for the MSc. program in Nature Management (Landscape, Biodiversity and Planning).

His educational background includes:

Professor Raulund-Rasmussen's research focuses on the complex interactions between forest management practices and environmental outcomes. His expertise spans forest ecology, soil science, and ecosystem services, with particular attention to carbon sequestration, biomass production systems, and ecological restoration. He investigates how different tree species, soil types, and management techniques affect nutrient cycling, water balance, and biodiversity in forest ecosystems, bridging theoretical ecological research with practical applications for sustainable forest management.

His publication record demonstrates consistent focus on sustainable forest management, with particular attention to biomass production systems, carbon cycling in forest ecosystems, and ecological restoration principles. The research shows strong connections between soil science, forest ecology, and environmental policy, addressing critical issues like climate change mitigation, bioenergy production, and ecosystem recovery.

Professor Raulund-Rasmussen has supervised numerous PhD students, including current candidates Petros Georgiadis, Anders Tærø Nielsen, and Seid Muhle Dawud, along with several completed doctorates. He has led or participated in significant research projects funded by the Velux Foundation, Nordic Council of Ministers, EU Framework Programs, and Strategic Research Council, demonstrating his leadership in advancing knowledge about sustainable forest resource management.
