About
Karol Nowak is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Law at Lund University and serves as Director of the Master's Programme in International Human Rights Law. He holds dual affiliations as a Researcher in Human Rights Law and Public International Law. His academic roles include teaching constitutional and procedural law, supervising master's theses, and coordinating the Nordic moot court competition course. He also teaches practitioners such as judges and police officers in Sweden and internationally.
His research focuses on the protection of individuals from state overreach in procedural contexts, particularly addressing counter-terrorism and serious crime. Key themes include presumption of innocence, evidence gathering, and legal frameworks balancing security needs with human rights. He employs historical and philosophical analysis to evaluate modern legal practices against democratic principles.
Dr. Nowak engages in extensive outreach activities as a liaison for the Raoul Wallenberg Institute, advising governments, law enforcement, and NGOs. He collaborates with the European Commission and coordinates Sweden's participation in the Venice-based E.MA Master's Programme in Human Rights and Democratization. His work includes drafting national human rights action plans and training legal professionals worldwide.
He has contributed to over 18 research outputs since 2022, focusing on legal consultations, conference reports, and treaty analyses. His projects include leading the Lund Human Rights Research Hub and participating in the 'In the Interest of the Nation' research initiative.
