Karla Torres is a Lecturer in the Department of English at the College of Arts and Humanities, California State University, Dominguez Hills. As a proud Chicana and first-generation student, she earned both her BA in English Education and MA in TESOL from CSUDH.
Her research examines:
- Sociolinguistics and raciolinguistics
- Educational linguistics and language intersectionality
- Race theory and Chicanx language varieties
Through qualitative methods like ethnographic interviews, she centers marginalized voices to challenge linguistic hierarchies. She is currently co-developing a social justice-oriented ESL curriculum highlighting Greater Los Angeles English dialects.
Beyond academia, she has industry experience as a linguist and data labeling specialist in tech.
