About
Professor Karl Tilman Rost serves as Professor of Physical Geography at Freie Universität Berlin's Institute of Geographical Sciences since 2011, following prior appointments as Visiting Professor (2008-2011) and Lecturer (2005-2007) at the same institution. His academic career spans multiple German universities including the University of Erfurt (C3 Professor, 2001-2005) and University of Göttingen (Private Lecturer, 1997-1998).
- PhD in Geosciences (1992), University of Göttingen
- Diploma in Geology and Palaeontology (1990), University of Göttingen
- Diploma in Geography (1988), University of Göttingen
Professor Rost's research centers on geomorphological processes and environmental change, with particular emphasis on Quaternary climate dynamics in Central Asia. His field investigations span the Mu Us Desert, Ordos Plateau, Qinling Shan mountains, and Central Asian highlands, integrating historical hydrology with contemporary watershed management challenges. His work demonstrates how landscape degradation patterns correlate with 2,300 years of climate variability and human land use in sensitive dryland regions.
His 15 most recent publications reveal consistent focus on Central Asian water governance, with 70% addressing transboundary water conflicts, rural water supply challenges, and capacity building in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. Methodologically, his work bridges historical flood documentation with modern watershed management, showing particular innovation in using paleoenvironmental records to inform contemporary sustainability planning.
Professor Rost actively participates in international research coordination through memberships in Arbeitskreis Geomorphologie, DEUQUA, and former involvement in IGCP projects 415 and 413. His current externally funded projects include DAAD-supported master's program development in Kazakhstan and BMBF-funded watershed management research in Kyrgyzstan.
- Principal investigator for BMBF project 'Method development for improved prediction of extreme flood peak discharges' (2005-2007)
- Lead researcher for DFG projects on Quaternary landscape change in Ordos Plateau (2000-2003) and Central Chinese mountains (1993-1998)
- Co-organizer of UN International Year of Freshwater events in Thuringia (2003-2004)
His laboratory work focuses on geomorphological mapping in high mountain environments, utilizing field-based sediment analysis to reconstruct paleoclimatic conditions. Current research integrates traditional geomorphological methods with modern watershed management approaches to address Central Asia's water security challenges through educational capacity building.
