Karl Hagstrom Miller

Karl Hagstrom Miller is an Associate Professor in the Department of Music and an Associate Chair at the University of Virginia's College of Arts and Sciences. His research bridges popular music studies, cultural history, and American studies, focusing on intersections of race, gender, sound, and economy.

His work explores how popular music in the U.S. has been shaped by racial segregation, economic forces, and cultural ideologies. His first book, Segregating Sound, examines how record companies and folklorists racialized music genres during the Jim Crow era. He is currently working on Sound Investments: Amateurs Make Pop Music, a two-century history of pop music from amateur musicians' perspectives.
