Karl Gerth

Karl Gerth is University Lecturer, Fellow, and Tutor in Modern Chinese History at Merton College, University of Oxford, previously teaching at the University of South Carolina. He holds a PhD from Harvard University and graduated from Grinnell College.

Dr. Gerth's research centers on Modern Chinese History with deep expertise in Chinese consumerism and the global socioeconomic/environmental consequences of China's adoption of Western lifestyles. Having conducted fieldwork in China and Japan for over twenty-five years since 1986, he analyzes transformations from scarcity to consumer abundance, as documented in his book "As China Goes, So Goes the World: How Chinese Consumers are Transforming Everything". He co-leads the Ceres21 Project investigating climate-resilient innovations in automotive and power sectors across three continents.

As a Merton College tutor, he guides students through Oxford's distinctive tutorial system. His grant-funded Ceres21 research demonstrates active scholarly engagement, while his rowing with Merton's 2nd VIII—winning blades in Torpids 2011—highlights his integration into Oxford's collegiate traditions.
