Karl Gaffney

Professor Karl Gaffney is an Honorary Professor at Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia. He is a Consultant Rheumatologist in Norwich since 1995, specializing in axial spondyloarthritis, adolescent rheumatology, and osteoporosis. He leads clinical service roles, chairs multiple national and international committees (e.g., National Axial Spondyloarthritis Society, BSR Biologics Guidelines Committee), and serves as associate editor for Rheumatology. His research focuses on epidemiology, treatment optimization, and extra-articular manifestations of axial SpA, with a large clinical trials program.

Education: MB, BCh, BAO Hons, FRCPI, FRCP.

Research interests span clinical and translational aspects of spondyloarthritis, emphasizing early diagnosis and healthcare communication. He co-developed award-winning educational programs (e.g., Back Pain Seminars, Back in Focus) and leads the NASS Gold Standard Delay to Diagnosis project. His recent publications address diagnostic delays, economic impacts, and collaborative cohort studies.
