University of WashingtonAbout
Karl F. Böhringer is Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering and Bioengineering at the University of Washington, Seattle, and serves as Director of the Institute for Nano-Engineered Systems (NanoES).
Education:
- Diplom-Informatiker, University of Karlsruhe, Germany (1990)
- M.S. in Computer Science, Cornell University (1993)
- Ph.D. in Computer Science, Cornell University (1997)
Professor Böhringer's research focuses on microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), macro-to-nano scale manipulation, microfluidics for life sciences, and microrobotics. His lab pioneered multi-batch self-assembling systems, massively parallel microactuator arrays, and walking microrobots, bridging engineering with biomedical applications through photonics and nano-device innovation.
He maintains active international collaborations through visiting faculty positions at Tohoku, Tokyo, and Kyoto Universities (Japan), University of São Paulo (Brazil), and École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland).
As NanoES Director, he leads the Böhringer Lab within UW's Photonics and Nano Devices research group, overseeing nanofabrication initiatives through the Northwest Nanotechnology Infrastructure (NNCI) and advancing microscale robotics for biomedical applications.
