About
Prof. Dr. Karl Auerswald is an Adjunct Professor at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) since 2001, affiliated with the TUM School of Life Sciences. His research focuses on aquatic systems biology, stable isotopes in ecological processes, and agricultural ecosystem dynamics. Previously, he held the Chair of Soil Science and Soil Protection at the University of Halle from 1994 to 2001. He earned his doctorate in Soil Science from TUM in 1984 and completed his habilitation there in 1992 after working at the Bavarian Geological Office.
His career spans academic leadership and contributions to understanding soil erosion, isotopic markers in terrestrial and aquatic systems, and environmental conservation. Notable awards include the 2019 Associate Editor Excellence Award and the 1986 Thurn&Taxis Agriculture Promotion Prize.
His publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches, integrating geochemistry, ecology, and environmental engineering to address global challenges like flood mitigation and climate change impacts on ecosystems. Research interests further include quantitative planning for sustainable agricultural practices and the application of isotopic techniques in environmental monitoring.
