Karl A. Scheidt

Karl A. Scheidt is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Northwestern University and Professor of Pharmacology in the Feinberg School of Medicine. He serves as faculty director of ChemCore for the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center and founding Executive Director of the NewCures Accelerator, developing commercialization strategies for therapeutic discoveries.

He earned his B.S. from the University of Notre Dame (1994) and Ph.D. from Indiana University (1999).

Dr. Scheidt's research pioneers small-molecule catalysis for sustainable chemical transformations and therapeutic applications. His group integrates Complex Synthesis, Catalysis, and Translational Chemistry platforms to develop novel routes to natural products targeting cancer and CNS disorders. The program emphasizes green alternatives to transition metal catalysis through photochemical and phosphorus-based methodologies.

Recent publications (2022-2025) demonstrate expertise in visible-light photocatalysis, hydrogen atom transfer, and covalent inhibitor design, with strong translational focus on targeted protein degradation, kinase inhibition, and radiation sensitization for oncology applications.

Dr. Scheidt leads the NewCures Accelerator to translate discoveries into commercial value while mentoring a diverse lab team through the Chemistry of Life Processes Institute (CLP). His leadership in ChemCore supports cancer research infrastructure at Northwestern.

The Scheidt Lab operates as a collaborative international team emphasizing mentorship and open scientific exchange. Affiliated with CLP, the group advances Northwestern's mission of integrating fundamental chemistry with societal impact through therapeutic innovation.
