Karishma Chatterjee is an Associate Professor of Instruction in the Department of Communication at The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), housed within the College of Liberal Arts. Her research focuses on health communication, interpersonal communication, and media portrayals of health issues such as HPV vaccination, STI prevention, and end-of-life care. She has received awards including the 2024 William S. Ward Endowment Award and the 2023 Dean’s AcCOLAdes Award.
Education: PhD in Communication from The Ohio State University (2008), with a dissertation on safer-sex communication in dating relationships. Also holds MA degrees from Emerson College (2001) and the University of Delhi (1998), and BA in English Literature (1996).
Research interests include hospice care communication, health disparities, and the role of media in shaping health behaviors. She has led or contributed to multiple grants, including a $500k CDC-funded project on health literacy materials and a National Endowment for the Humanities grant revising a medical humanities certificate.
Teaching spans graduate and undergraduate courses in communication theory, health communication, and intercultural communication. Advised students include Jewel Le Blanc and Paul Kozar.
