About
Karin Idevall Hagren is a Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor (Docent) at Stockholm University's Department of Swedish and Multilingualism. She leads the research group Language and Societal Challenges, focusing on intersections between sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, and societal sustainability.
Her research investigates how racism, Swedish national identity, and cultural norms are constructed through language across media, politics, and digital platforms. Key methods include discourse analysis and membership categorization studies.
Recent publications analyze historical shifts in Swedish identity (1870-1940), media framing of refugees during the Ukraine war, and racism in social media comment fields. She specifically examines power structures, privilege, and exclusionary language practices.
