Karen O'Brien

Professor Karen O'Brien serves as Vice-Chancellor and Warden of Durham University—England's third oldest university—since January 2022. As chief executive, she leads the institution's educational and research mission while representing it on the Russell Group Board and engaging in national higher education policy development.

Her academic journey includes foundational studies at the University of Oxford and University of Pennsylvania, followed by teaching and research appointments at Warwick, Cardiff, and Cambridge Universities before transitioning to senior leadership roles.

Professor O'Brien's scholarly work centers on European Enlightenment literature and intellectual history, with significant contributions to ethical frameworks in emerging technologies through her establishment of Oxford's Institute for Ethics of Artificial Intelligence. Her research bridges historical scholarship with contemporary societal challenges, particularly sustainable development and inclusive education.

Her distinguished recognitions include:

• British Academy’s Rose Mary Crawshay prize for her seminal work on Enlightenment literature
• Harkness Fellowship and multiple prestigious fellowships including Royal Society of Arts and English Association

Throughout her career, Professor O'Brien has secured transformative funding including £150m for Oxford's Schwarzman Centre for Humanities, while championing student access initiatives and regional economic partnerships. She currently oversees Durham University's strategic renewal across research excellence, financial sustainability, and social mobility in the North East region.

Her leadership extends to establishing the Institute for Ethics of Artificial Intelligence at Oxford and driving Durham's commitment to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through academic-industry partnerships and community engagement programs.
