Professor Karen O'Brien serves as Vice-Chancellor and Warden of Durham University—England's third oldest university—since January 2022. As chief executive, she leads the institution's educational and research mission while representing it on the Russell Group Board and engaging in national higher education policy development.
Her academic journey includes foundational studies at the University of Oxford and University of Pennsylvania, followed by teaching and research appointments at Warwick, Cardiff, and Cambridge Universities before transitioning to senior leadership roles.
Professor O'Brien's scholarly work centers on European Enlightenment literature and intellectual history, with significant contributions to ethical frameworks in emerging technologies through her establishment of Oxford's Institute for Ethics of Artificial Intelligence.
