Karen Johnson

Dr. Karen Johnson is an Associate Professor at Shippensburg University’s Department of Academic Engagement & Exploratory Studies. She serves as Director of the Graduate Writing Center and Co-Editor of the Writing Lab Newsletter: A Journal of Writing Center Scholarship. Over 13 years, she led the Writing Studio and held leadership roles in international writing center organizations.

• Research interests: Writing center studies, service-learning pedagogy, and assessment in literacy education.
• Professional service: Treasurer of International Writing Centers Association and Mid-Atlantic Writing Association.

Her recent publications focus on writing tutor education, contingent labor in writing programs, and digital scholarship collaborations. She received the Academic Exchange Quarterly Editors’ Choice Award (2015) for her work on tutoring impacts. Dr. Johnson mentors both undergraduate and graduate tutors in professional conference presentations.
