Karen Brown

Professor Karen Brown is a faculty member at the University of St Andrews, affiliated with the School of Art History, Centre for Contemporary Art, and Institute for Museums, Heritage and Society. Her work intersects museums, sustainability, and transnational cultural memory, particularly focusing on Europe-Latin America relations and climate adaptation.

Research interests include:

• Climate change and museum roles in ecological diplomacy
• Decolonizing heritage practices
• Transnational island museologies
• Community co-production and well-being
• UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) integration

Recent publications explore islandness, climate emergency responses, and digital curatorial methods. Awards include the 2021 European Heritage Awards ILUCIDARE Prize and the 2008 ‘Silver Sounds’ Exhibition. She leads projects funded by the Leverhulme Trust, UKRI, and Scottish Funding Council, focusing on Caribbean-Scotland collaborations and Latin American climate resilience.
