Kamel Khalili, PhD, is a Professor and Chair of Microbiology, Immunology and Inflammation at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine, Temple University. He also holds the Laura H. Carnell Professorship and directs the Comprehensive NeuroAIDS Center and the Center for Neurovirology and Gene Editing. His research focuses on neurodegenerative, neuroproliferative, and neuroinflammatory mechanisms using human neurotropic viruses like JC and HIV as models.
Education: PhD in Microbiology from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (1983), followed by postdoctoral training at The Wistar Institute and a Fogarty Scholarship at the National Cancer Institute, NIH (1987).
Research interests include viral-induced neural dysfunction, protein quality control pathways, chromosomal instability in CNS infections, and neuroprotective roles of glial cells. His lab employs advanced molecular techniques, animal models, and clinical samples to develop diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
Recent articles highlight CRISPR-based HIV elimination in humanized mice, HSV-1 suppression via gene editing, and preclinical CRISPR safety in non-human primates. His work bridges virology, immunology, and neurobiology with translational medicine.
