Dr. Kamau Wright is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, specifically within the Albert Nerken School of Engineering. A Brooklyn native, he brings extensive expertise in thermo-fluids and plasma engineering to his role, where he leads the Thermo-fluid, Energy and Plasma Lab Group.
Education: Dr. Wright earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Howard University, followed by M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering and mechanics from Drexel University, where he specialized in thermo-fluids and plasma engineering.
Research Focus: His technical research centers on the innovative application of low temperature plasma (LTP) discharges, particularly in addressing environmental challenges. Key areas include plasma decomposition of CO2, wastewater treatment through plasma oxidation of organic matter, pathogen inactivation using plasma technology, and fouling mitigation strategies for heat exchangers. Parallel to his technical work, he conducts engineering education research focusing on data-driven assessment of pedagogical approaches including collaborative learning and inquiry-based learning methodologies.
Professional Affiliations: Dr. Wright maintains active membership in several prestigious professional organizations:
- American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
- American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE)
- National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)
Teaching & Mentorship: He has taught comprehensive courses in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and plasma engineering. His NASA-funded research has provided valuable opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students to engage in faculty-mentored research projects.
Contact: Prospective students and collaborators interested in plasma, thermo-fluids, or energy research are encouraged to reach out via email at kamau.wright@cooper.edu or by phone at 212.353.4299.
