Kaliva Maria is currently a Post-doctoral Fellow at the Department of Materials Science and Technology, University of Crete, and a member of the Hybrid Nanostructures Group at the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (FORTH). She holds a PhD (2004), MSc (2002), and Bachelor's (2000) in Chemistry from the University of Crete.
Her research focuses on designing functional and responsive polymers, including smart biodegradable polymers and natural polymer modifications for biomedical applications (e.g., drug delivery, tissue engineering). She also explores porous materials for gas capture and catalysis, as well as smart polymer coatings and active packaging.
Key achievements include the 2010 Best Poster Award in Polymer Chemistry and the 2007 Best Oral Presentation Award in Materials Science. Her work bridges polymer chemistry with applications in nanotechnology and materials science.
