Kabirullah Lutfy, Ph.D., is a Professor of Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Western University of Health Sciences' College of Pharmacy. He joined the institution in April 2003 and holds a B.Pharm. from Kabul University, an M.Sci. from St. John's University, and a Ph.D. in Pharmacology & Toxicology from the University of California, Irvine.
His research focuses on neuropharmacology, particularly the role of neuropeptides like opioid peptides in addiction, food reward, obesity, and diabetes. He employs behavioral, molecular, and neurochemical techniques such as microdialysis and Western blotting to study drug-induced changes in dopamine, glutamate, and stress hormones.
Dr. Lutfy has secured significant extramural grants, including NIH/NIDA and NIH/NIAAA funding for projects targeting nociceptin receptor agonists in cocaine and alcohol addiction. Notable awards include the 2022 Faculty External Service Award and 2015 Provost Scholar of the Year. He has served on numerous university committees, including the Promotion and Tenure Committee and Research Committee, and actively contributes to professional organizations like the Society for Neuroscience and Research Society on Alcoholism.
