Jürgen Buchenau is the Dowd Term Chair of Capitalism Studies and Director of Capitalism Studies at the University of North Carolina Charlotte. He also serves as Interim Director of Graduate Studies (Fall 2024). With a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1993), his research focuses on 19th and 20th century Mexico, including political economy, revolutionary dynamics, and Mexico’s global relations. He teaches courses on Latin American history, political economy, and film-based history.
His major works include Anti-Catholicism in the Mexican Revolution (2024) and The Sonoran Dynasty in Mexico (2023), recognized with prestigious awards. He currently edits Viewpoints: Puntos de Vista for Wiley-Blackwell and serves as Editor-in-Chief of The Latin Americanist.
Buchenau’s research spans topics like revolutionary leadership, state formation, and transnational influences. His recent projects include a book on U.S.-Mexican relations and updated editions of his earlier works. His editorial roles reflect his commitment to advancing Latin American studies through academic publishing.
