Jörg Trelenberg

Jörg Trelenberg serves as Associate Professor of Church History at the Faculty of Theology, University of Münster, holding an adjunct professorship since 2013 while continuously teaching since 2007 as a private lecturer. His academic home is the Department of Church History (Seminar für Kirchengeschichte I), where he contributes to theological education within Germany's prominent Protestant faculty.

His educational trajectory spans Latin, Greek, Protestant theology, and music studies at Münster and Bochum universities (1985-1999), culminating in First and Second State Examinations for teaching qualifications. He earned his Dr. theol. summa cum laude in 2003 with an award-winning dissertation, followed by habilitation in Church History with Patristics specialization in 2007.

Prof. Trelenberg's scholarship centers on two historical pillars: Ancient Church History examining Augustine of Hippo's theology, Tatianus Syrus' contributions, Roman Empire Christian persecutions, and martyrdom theology; and Reformation History analyzing Martin Luther's theology and Anabaptist movements. His Patristics expertise forms a critical bridge between early Christian thought and medieval developments.

Concurrently with his university role, he maintained a distinguished secondary education career at Friedrich-Leopold-Woeste-Gymnasium, progressing from teacher (1997) to Senior Director of Studies (2017), while also teaching at Göttingen University (2015) and TU Dortmund (2016).
