Jörg Szarzynski

Prof. Jörg Szarzynski is a Research Fellow in the Department of Geography at the University of the Free State (UFS) and serves as the Head of the Global Mountain Safeguard Research Programme (GLOMOS) at the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS). He is also an Associate Professor at the UFS Disaster Management Training and Education Centre for Africa (DiMTEC).

• Education: Diploma in Geography (University of Bonn), PhD in Physical Geography and Atmospheric Sciences (Universities of Mannheim and Göttingen)

Research Interests: His work bridges environmental science, disaster risk management, and sustainable development, with a focus on climate change adaptation, earth observation technologies, and capacity-building initiatives. He contributes to global frameworks like the Global Mountain Biodiversity Assessment (GMBA) and MaS LTSER projects.

Expertise: Climatology, remote sensing, global environmental change, curriculum development for higher education, and international training programs.

Initiatives: Coordinates GLOMOS and DiMTEC, participates in organizing international seminars, and develops instructional theories for disaster management education.
